WordCamp, Family, Fitness, and Food
Well it’s official, I’ve signed up for WordCamp Chicago June 5 & 6th. It’s a conference dedicated to WordPress developers and power users. It’s unfortunate that the schedule isn’t up but based on random chatter and past conferences I’m sure it’s going to be great. Besides, I have a ton to learn so anything is better than what I know today. I have to admit to knowing PHP which is half the battle.
One of the things that got me off my butt to register, I had been procrastinating a bit, was some fellow Tweeps beat me to the punch. I mentioned it on Twitter yesterday and @ajlovestolose jumped on it which made me feel like a total slacker. Anyhow we have a small fitness contingent going as of now:
- Scott Stawarz — Spoke at Fitbloggin on SEO and might speak at WordCamp as well.
- Jennette Fulda — Author, Blogger, and @PastaQueen
- AJ — Great fitness blogger and fellow Chicagoan
- Jennifer — Blogger, Writer, and Personal Trainer
- Sean Willson — that’s me
We should have a fitness dinner or something while everyone is here. Maybe we can get others to attend and have a larger get together, any takers? Drop a comment if your going to attend and maybe we can set something up.
They found me
No I wasn’t trying to hide or anything but I certainly wasn’t advertising my fitness blog either. I have my other blog, and actually mention this one, but no one ever visited and I don’t post there much. It was just a matter of time I suppose that someone actually clicked over and that was last night. Hi family!
It’s not biggie really, at least not for most of my family. They’re usually very supportive, loving, and really get behind my goals. There are others though that I worry a little about their response to my openness. Since they don’t use the “Internets” much I’m not so worried. The truth never hurt anyone right? right?
My postings will continue to be open and honest about my past and how I got to be 450 pounds in the first place. I’ve always been true to that goal and won’t stray from the path.
Skipping workout rest day?
In light of my upcoming milestone I’m debating on skipping my workout rest day today. I know I shouldn’t overtrain and need to rest but I feel like I should put everything into hitting this goal given how big it is mentally. I feel very energized and certainly don’t feel like I need a day off so I guess I’ll just listen to my body and take it as it comes.
No worries, I’m certainly not going to do something killer today. I’m thinking a quick 20 MAS or something like that. Anyone have any other suggestions to get the blood pumping but not over do it?
Food changeup
I was listening to Episode 9 of Two Fit Chicks yesterday, along with the other 9 of them as well, and realized I hadn’t been changing up my food as much as I should this month. Time to add some variety, now I just have to think about what I want and can change easily.
I’ve always wanted to try to cook certain foods but never have, like eggplant or squash for example. If anyone has any quick easy recipes for these I’d love to see them. I’m going to dig through my cookbooks tonight to see if there are any.
As far as changing other things, they talked about changing simple ingredients in the foods you eat on the podcast. That I can do today and actually am! I’m sitting here with a Pomegranate Chobani Greek Yogurt as I type. I’ve never had it nor have I really eaten much pomegranate at all. I’m usually not a Chobani fan but I’ll try anything once.
I’m going to try some other changes today at lunch as well. I haven’t been to Protein Bar in a while and I think today’s the day. Making small changes often to the food you eat add up over time.
Have you been changing your food choices?

That’s cool that you are going to Word Camp Chicago! I think its’ great to get together with fellow bloggers! The one we have organized is just a lil lunch at a fancy restaurant, no sponsors, no goodie bags (bummer!) lol But it will be fun!
I try to change it up with food. Because of a PICKY BF we eat a lot of vegetarian dishes, so last night I was DYING for protein and I cooked up a bunch of turkey breast cutlets.
YUM! I think it helps our bodies and our minds not to get bored!

I can’t agree more, variety really makes it easier and more enjoyable. Sometimes I just get into a rut though and forget.
I have been in a food rut right now and searching everyones blogs for some new ideas too. I’m excited to see if anyone mentions how to cook egg plant because it’s one of those things I have always wanted to try.
as far as exersice to get the blood pumping, I like to do leg lounges from one end of the house to the other (like 30 of them) to get my heart rate going before I start using my resistance band reps on my arms. Of course it drives my daughter crazy when she is trying to sleep in and I’m constantly going back and forth down the hall lol.

I was thinking of doing some walking lunges with some heavy weight. I’ve been reading up on different techniques to just use weight and repetitive motions like lunges to failure. I’m gonna add it to the list, thanks
No luck on any recipe suggestions yet.
I’m a fitness blogger in Chicago (attended Fitbloggin in Baltimore) and plan on attending the Wordcamp. Would love to meet up with all of you – Saturday night? I’m doing the Run for the Zoo 10K the next morning, so should be fun!

I updated the posting with your information. I think once we know more about how many are attending we can pick the date / time but Saturday night seems good for me. I wasn’t aware there was a race the next day … I wish I was a bit lighter, I might give it a shot.
My family doesn’t know about my blog either, except for my mother! I guess I didn’t want to feel like I had to “censor” my posts.

I wish I knew PHP! I use wordpress and just do the best I can! Sounds like that conference will be a lot of fun.
I’ve known quite a few bloggers who didn’t advertise their blog to their family and were eventually discovered!

Saturday Night dinner, appetizers, or drinks sounds like a good idea.
@Diane, There’s two tracks at wordcamp chicago. One is more geared towards users of wordpress. The other is geared toward developers. So, you might get a lot of value of attending.
