Cleaning Out The Closets

Clothes HousecleaningI’ve finally had enough with trying to find clothes that I can wear to work or that don’t require special folding or tucking. It seems like I’m wearing the same 4-5 shirts and a few pairs of pants to work every week. It’s time that I replace some of my wardrobe with clothes that actually fit the changing me. But before I can go buy some I need to clean house and take inventory of what actually fits.

Thus began the great emptying and sorting of all of my tent clothes from the closet and the dresser. It might not look like much (picture right) but let me assure you it’s all of my clothes.

Clothes That Are LeavingAfter the clothes pileup was finished I threw an audio book on my iPhone speaker and proceeded to try on each and every article of clothing. This was actually more tiring than I thought it would be and ended up being quite a chore. It seemed like a good idea at first and also seemed like something I could finish in about 20 minutes. Well about 60 minutes later I ended up with 3 piles of clothes. The piles in the right picture are the ones that are going to be donated, in two stages. Donate is the pile we’ll be donating asap and Store will be going into the basement for a few months before being donated.

Clothes RemainingThe little piles in the picture on the right are all of the clothes that I have left. These are all of the clothes that actually fit me … well actually a few of those shirts are my big “comfy” shirts that I wear late at night to relax. This picture includes workout, play, and work … trust me that’s are all of them. It’s actually kinda embarrassing that I’ve been wearing so many big clothes for so long yet none of them fit me any more.

Shopping Carsons Sucked

I actually usually enjoy getting out and doing some shopping but today didn’t end up being one of those days. It certainly started with excitement that I was buying some new clothes, don’t get me wrong. What I didn’t expect though was how bummed I felt that the first place we visited, Carson Pirie Scott, only had clothes that went up to 40 waist and 2XL shirts. I’m currently at 44 waist and prefer 2XLT shirts so they actually stay tucked in. I was looking forward to actually shopping at a mainstream store but instead was beat back into the reality that I still have quite a ways to go before I conform to the societal clothes size norms.

After picking up my excitement and putting it into my pocket we walked through the mall a bit and stopped at JCPenny. I figured I’d check to see if they were playing by the same size playbook. I haven’t shopped in a Pennies in 20 years or more so I had no idea what to expect.

I was happy to find that they actually had some clothes but was saddened that they were in their Big & Tall section. So I’ve went from shopping at a B&T store to working my butt off taking me out of their clothes range to now having to shop in the B&T section of the mainstream stores. That makes me feel … ummm … excited, yea that’s the ticket.

Anyhow, I did end up picking up a few new pieces of clothing. Nothing close to filling in the space that my old clothes took up but these actually fit me which is awesome. I ended up buying 2 pairs of pants, 2 pair of summer shorts, 2 shirts that fit today, and 2 shirts that will fit in a few weeks. I’m planning on buying more in the future but it’s best that I don’t go to crazy right now.

I feel like it’s a balancing act between spending money that I’m planning on donating away as I get smaller and trying to look respectable when walking the streets and at work. For now all I can do is shop at cheaper stores like JCPennies so I can get more actual articles of clothing. Once I get to my goal weight I’ll hopefully have more fun and catch the clothing bug.

Sean–Clothes are such the conundrum! Don’t let it get you down though. Just think about where you were compared to now. THEN think about where you’re heading! That should make you feel great.

I don’t know anything about your financial status, but if you can afford it, you totally deserve to be buying clothes for yourself as often as you have to do it. It makes you look better and more professional. And it makes you feel good about yourself. Plus if you’re donating your old clothes, then you’re helping someone else out while also helping yourself. Win-Win!

Great job on the smaller clothes! Keep working hard.

When I first got rid of my “fat clothes” – my “fit clothes” pile was about the same size as yours. I had one pair of jeans, two pairs of work pants, 2 pairs of workout pants, and about 15 shirts that worked for workout/home/work. I’ve updated my wardrobe a bit now that I’ve been plateau’d for so long, but I can’t wait to shed the last of this weight so I can get rid of the rest of my “fat clothes!”

You’ll get there – just keep going and you’ll be in the mainstream section of mainstream stores before you know it!
