It Was A Very Exhausting Weekend

Sleepy HeadThis weekend didn’t feel like it was every going to end. From beginning to end it was a blur of bad food choices, good workouts, and reprimanding of children. I swear I’m amazed it’s over and I survived it but I’m certainly happy that it is.

It’s hard having a two year old and a one month old right now. Having a one month old is hard enough, especially on a breast feeding wife, but add to the mix a two year old who fights for attention and you have a recipe for lots of timeouts and thousands of no’s per day. It’s so mentally draining reprimanding your children and especially so when they are young and don’t understand the why’s yet. Compound that with changing from a crib to a bed and you have the making for problems like when and how to sleep or when you can get a workout in.

I had my usual free meal on Friday night but the bad food choices extended well into the weekend. I don’t know why I sabotaged my progress this weekend with meals but I’m certain the stress and sleep deprivation doesn’t help. About the only positive things I can say about the food was that it wasn’t every meal and surprisingly LoseIt didn’t show me as being to far over my calories.

I did however manage to get a nice long bike ride in this weekend from my house to The Morton Arboretum, around two times, and then back home. I estimated it at 24 miles which is pretty good for my second ride this year. The ride around the arboretum was pretty spectacular and I even managed to snap a quick picture of some flowers while I was there. They actually close off half of the place in the mornings to cars and make it accessible only to runners and cyclists. It’s never really crazy busy with cars but when it’s closed we owned the road so it was awesome. I think this little ride is going to become a staple of my summer weekend riding season.

Despite the bad weekend I was pretty happy with my workouts for last week.

Monday, Morning (35 min)
5 min warmup and then 30 min of circuit training.
Tuesday, Evening (35 min)
5 min warmup and then 30 min of circuit training.
Wednesday, Morning (35 min)
5 min warmup and then 30 min of circuit training.
Thursday, Day Off
Nothing today, it was an off day.
Friday, Morning (45 min)
Upper body weight lifting following the BFL high point routine of 12, 10, 8, 6, 12, 12. I really upped my weights today pushing each and every exercise to new weights making sure I kept good form.
Saturday, Morning (100 min)
As I mentioned above this was my second ride of the year and was 24 miles to the arboretum, around twice, and then back home. Surprisingly I was only slightly sore the next day and that was mostly in my legs but quickly went away.
Sunday, Morning (45 min)
5 min warmup followed by 40 min of circuit training.

How was your weekend? Hopefully you got more sleep than I did.

And I thought my weekend was busy! I can only imagine having two children in the mix! I would have been eating like a linebacker!

I had a little easier time of it as I have no kids. Just work,11 mile run, poker, golf and paperwork. I was a little over the high end of my calorie range this week 3 days in a row but worked it off.

Sometimes life gets in the way, and that’s ok because in the grand scheme of things, it’s 2 days out of one month out of an entire year. I’m thankful I don’t have kids to deal with yet (whew) but I’ll make sure I take some tips from you. Fantastic bike ride! I really need to get a road bike when I get back to DC. Need to start training for THE BIG ONE!

I can totally relate to your situation. My kids are older but I will never forget how difficult the mix of toddlers and newborns can be! This is the hard part, but as they get older it gets easier. (My boys haven’t quite reached the teenage years yet, so we’ll see how that goes!)

Good luck this week, and I hope you can get more rest!

This too shall pass Seany. It is very challenging but you will soon see the benefit of what a joy it can be to have 2 kids close together. If anyone can handle it I know you and Amy can. Love you … as for my weekend I spent 12 hours at a business expo where I managed to sunburn my eyeballs (I will explain later)

I agree that this too shall pass. It’s hard having kids and taking care of yourself too. I only have one (she’s 5) and it’s hard. I’m blessed because she’s now at the age where she understands a little better and I can also incorporate her into some of my workouts. She will ride her bike while I walk quickly and/or jog sometimes. You ever think about getting one of those wagon/cart thingies for the back of the bike? You could take your 2 year old with you.

    Hang in there!

Hey Sean, you might want to try out the free version of RunKeeper to track your biking activities on your iphone (I think you have an iphone). It uses the GPS in the phone. I have a 2 year old 3g iphone, and as long as I have full charge, I can use Runkeeper for a nice long ride just keep the screen off and turn off wifi to keep the battery usage down.
